The Beats Pill speaker has got some pop

The $199 Beats Pill arrives in late October and comes in three colors: Black, red, and white.

In recent months I've reviewed several compact, portable Bluetooth speakers and the list ofJawbone Jambox competitors just keeps growing. One I've got my eye on is the $199 Beats by Dre Pill, which, needless to say, looks like a pill -- the capsule kind, anyway.

Early word is that this one sounds better than the Jambox and has a few extra features such as tap-to-pair NFC (for smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S3 that have NFC) and apt-X technology for "easy and instant Bluetooth audio." Like the Jambox, this one also has speakerphone capabilities and a built-in rechargeable battery. A carabiner is included for clipping it onto your backpack.

With the product due to ship at the end of October, I should be getting a review unit fairly soon, and will put it up against the competition. While the Pill's a little pricey at $199 (the Jambox is now $179), at least Beats didn't bring it out at $250; if it performs well, it should be a force in this category.
